Three Indians accused of raping a woman in New Zealand two years ago have been acquitted by a Hamilton court, which also ordered their immediate deportation to India.
Harvinder Singh, 22, Kamaljeet Singh, 27 and Sumit Vermani, 26, were charged with raping a 19-year-old girl in 2011.
The trio met the complainant during a famous racing event in Hamilton, and invited her to a party where they continued to interact, and it was on this night the complainant claimed to have been raped.
A Hamilton High Court jury of seven women and five men retired today and took four hours to reach their verdicts, Radio New Zealand reported.
The jury has found three men not guilty of raping the woman, it said.
The men had tears in their eyes and appeared relieved, when the verdict was read out by Justice Venning of the Hamilton High Court, reports from New Zealand said.
However, in a dramatic twist, the trio were immediately handcuffed by police after walking out of the dock and taken to Hamilton Central Police Station.
Vermani's lawyer Mike Robb said at the instruction of the Immigration Department, the trio will now be deported back to India.
Amir Chand, a fourth accused, was last week discharged without conviction and was also immediately deported back to India.
