The baby boy appeared to be from a well-to-do family and was probably abandoned due to possibility of being affected by some congenital disorder, a policeman said.
"The baby was found in a basket with Rs 40,500. Efforts are on to trace the persons who abandoned him there," Shyam Nagar SHO Balaram said.
Some visitors heard the baby's cries and informed police following which he was admitted to J K Lone hospital.
He said the baby has been admitted to neonatal intensive care unit.
Down's syndrome is a congenital disorder arising out of a chromosome defect which causes intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities including short stature and a broad facial profile.
