All MLAs of the INLD, Haryana's main opposition party, today pasted paper written "Bolna Mana hai" (speaking not allowed) on their mouths alleging that they were not allowed to speak in the Assembly.
During the Question Hour on the last day of the Haryana Assembly's winter session, the INLD MLAs, led by leader of opposition Abhay Chautala, arrived in the Assembly with their mouths gagged, much to the amusement of the treasury benches.
They were upset as Chautala was not allowed to intervene during a discussion yesterday by Speaker Kanwar Pal.
Today, when the Question Hour was in progress, INLD MLAs remained silent and members whose questions were listed refused to ask.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ram Bilas Sharma urged them to remove the papers and quipped "it could cause trouble in breathing".
"Such protests are symbolic and it should not be held for long," he said.
State minister Anil Vij took a swipe at INLD members, wondering whether they have adopted Jain religion or suffering from any ailment.
With INLD members refusing to react, Congress MLAs came out in their support with Geeta Bhukkal asking treasury benches not to make fun of their protest and Lalit Nagar alleging that the voice of opposition was being "suppressed".
Notably, Speaker Kanwar Pal and Chautala had engaged in verbal duel yesterday after the INLD leader was stopped from "unnecessarily interfering" in an issue raised by Lalit Nagar.
INLD members removed piece of papers from their mouths after an half hour responding to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's request.
Chautala said being the leader of opposition in the House, it was his responsibility to intervene when an MLA raises an issue.
"When you decide who will speak and who will not, then why we are here," Chautala asked, leading heated exchange of words between treasury and INLD members.
Congress MLA Lalit Nagar had yesterday alleged that one 'Mama' was allegedly shielding those who were into illegal activities like running private buses in Faridabad.
During Zero Hour today, INLD MLA Jaswinder Singh asked Vij to apologise for his comments.
After seeing INLD members objecting to Vij's statement, Haryana minister Ram Bilas Sharma pointing towards Vij in a lighter vein said, "the one who is unmarried is helpless."
Later, talking to media, Chautala alleged that the state government was running away from facing questions in the House and opposition was not being allowed to speak.
