IPS conference begins, focus on crimes against women

Over 100 senior police officers of Odisha discussed the growing crime against women in the two-day annual conference being held at the police headquarters here.

"Crime against women is one of the important topics of discussion in the conference. We have taken up the subject," said Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra after inagurating the two-day conference.

Mishra said the police is now according the issue of women's safety in the state as high priority.

The state has approved a proposal to recruit some 500 women sub-inspectors and children and women desks in all police stations would be in place to deal with such cases by this year.

Besides, the police officers are also discussing threadbare the critical issue of economic offences and naxal menace which had been the focus of attention of the force for more than a decade now.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who also holds the home portfolio, is scheduled to address the valedictory session of the conference tomorrow and is likely to inaugurate some new facilities to boost the crime detection mechanisms, sources indicated.

IPS officers, including Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all the districts and officers heading different armed force units are attending the Conference, which is an annual stock-taking exercise of the police.
