Boroumanand Sadeq Muhammed (21), his father Galaram Hussain (46) and mother Bageri Manjer (45) hailing from South Africa were on a trip to India, police said.
The family was nabbed when they tried to cheat a money exchange firm in the city yesterday. A total of 300 notes of various countries, including Dollars, Euros and Pounds were seized from them, police said.
They said the trio had approached the pump employees expressing interest in the new Indian currency. The man diverted their attention by asking details of the notes and money exchange firms, while the wife and son lifted about Rs 80,000 cash. All of them then fled the spot.
Police said the three are also involved in many money exchange frauds in Thrissur and Malappuram districts.
