Independent MLA from Langate seat in Jammu and Kashmir Engineer Rashid today demanded abolition of the state Legislative Council, claiming that majority of the eight members nominated to the Upper House today do not fit into constitutional criteria for these positions.
"Governor N N Vohra, who takes pride in calling himself the guardian of moral standards, should have returned the nomination file to the government as majority of these nominees to the Upper House lack the desired competence and efficiency and are only handpicked," Rasheed said in a statement issued here.
He said that "barring a few members from the eight members nominated to the Upper House of the state Legislature today, majority of the members do not fit into constitutional criteria of being capable for these positions".
Demanding abolition of the Legislative Council, he said the Upper House in the state has become a "rehabilitation centre" for the political turncoats and losers.
"Those who loose elections or change loyalties are rehabilitated in the Legislative Council. It has become a burden on the state exchequer and it is now high time to abolish this institution if we are serious in achieving political transparency," he said.
