Jan Dhan scheme launched in Arunachal Pradesh

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched here today by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in presence of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and SBI Deputy Managing Director (Corporate and Financial Banking).
The ambitious financial inclusion scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Red Fort during his Independence Day speech to bring the entire poor population of the country under financial inclusion.
Describing the scheme as 'special', Tuki said that it would benefit majority of the poor people in the state who have not any access to banking system.
Asking bankers to extend banking services to all remote and inaccessible areas of the land-locked state by opening new branches, the Chief Minister suggested inclusion of Arunachal Rural Banks and Cooperative Apex Banks under the scheme for its successful implementation.
Tuki while referring to number of bank dacoity incidents in the state capital in recent times, further requested the bankers to improve their security so that the hard earned money of the poor people is protected.
Describing it as the biggest ever financial scheme launched ever in the country, Rijiju said such facility would empower the people.
"This is a revolutionary scheme for the poor who are far away from banks," he added.
Arunachalees are 'ignorant' of banking sector he said and called for an orchestrated move to bring mass awareness for achieving the target first in the country.
Those who are living below the poverty line would be first target, said state Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi.
The path-breaking scheme aimed to bring the population under insurance coverage, pension benefits, financial transactions etc. By opening a zero account through core banking solution of all banks with the help of Aadhar cards.
The state government in collaboration with the state level bankers' committee, State Bank of India aims at bringing total 2.6 lakh households in Arunachal under the coverage.
SBI deputy general manager Prabin Kumar Gupta said altogether 11,360 accounts have been opened under the scheme in the past few days in 158 branches and 54 correspondents of different banks in the state.
