Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today said the IITs are not getting international rankings due to perception management issue and this would now be tackled by his ministry.
"IITs are recognised across the globe as one of the few best institutes of the world but there is a feeling of unfinished agenda, because though we are the best institutes we are not ranked," he said after inaugurating the IIT Goa campus.
"Why? Because when I studied, the whole international ranking framework, there are nearly 40 per cent marks are given for perception and therefore I decided as my first priority that we will give IITs its due place in international ranking by tackling and addressing this perception management issue," he added.
Announcing an initiative that would spare the IIT aspirants from going to coaching classes, Javadekar said coaching centres are flourishing considering the tough competition.
"The coaching centre charges lakhs of rupees. We have taken new initiative - IIT Pal- through which the pupil will get access to lectures from the experts from across the country. (The pupil) will also get material, tutorial and discussion forum, all these will be available online and also on TV channel. We want to use the technology," he said.
The minister further said that the Centre under the 'Gyan initiatives' is bringing foreign faculties.
"Over 200 professors have conducted the courses and more than 600 hundred will come this year," he said.
