Scores of jawans from different border guarding forces will be sensitised on the issue of cross-border smuggling of drugs in the national capital tomorrow on the occassion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking tomorrow.
Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot along with other dignitaries and jawans of Narcotics Control Bureau, CRPF, ITBP, BSF, SSB, CISF will take the pledge and also participate in 'RUN against Drug Abuse' for the mass sensitisation followed by a symbolic slogan march with police bands here. This year's focus for the run is-- "Let's develop communities without drugs".
"The cross-border smuggling of drugs is a major area of concern for the government. Drugs from the Golden Triangle and Pakistan are not only being smuggled into India, but the same corridors are being used to traffic narcotics out of India, thus creating a two-way routes for illegal trade in drugs.
"This is leading to an increase of dug abuse in the country. Thus there is an urgent need to man these borders and intensify the checksand screening and jawans play an important role in this genre. Thus they need to be sensitised about the various modus operandi used," a senior ministry official said.
President Pranab Mukherjee will confer the national awards to organisations and individuals who have shown exemplary contribution in the field of drug prevention, at a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan tomorrow.
