Jeev Milkha Singh, who will be leading the Asian team in the upcoming battle against Europe in the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-Hicom, met with the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak ahead of announcing his team here.
The highly-anticipated second edition of the biennial Ryder Cup-style tournament will take place at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club here from January 15-17.
A strong European side has already been named and captain Darren Clarke's team will include several Ryder Cup stars like Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood.
Jeev's team will include the top four players from the Asian Tour Order of Merit, which would include Indian stars Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia, four leading Asian players from the world rankings, and four captain's picks.
The Indian ace, a four-time champion on the European Tour and winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit twice, was impressed with Prime Minster's Razak's deep knowledge of the game and Asian players.
"I think we are lucky to enjoy the support of Prime Minister Razak, who is a good golfer himself and is excited about the tournament," said Jeev.
"I shared the names of some of the players who will be in the team, and he knew about most of them. He is also going to play the pro-am, and he said he would try and come to the golf course and support Asia."
The strength of Asian players was evident from their position in the latest world ranking that came out yesterday.
"I think we can match Europe pound-for-pound. We now have seven players inside the top-60 of the world rankings. Players like Anirban Lahiri and Thongchai Jaidee have the added experience of playing the Presidents Cup this year and we have in-form players like Byeong-hun An and Kiradech Aphibarnrat. I really think we will have a very strong team," said Jeev, who also celebrates his 44th birthday on Tuesday.
The team is scheduled to be announced at 8.30am IST.
