The construction work for the proposed airport at Jewar, the second one in the national capital region, will start by year-end, Uttar Pradesh government said today.
The state government has received in-principle approval from the Centre for the project and expects the airport to have a capacity to handle 60 lakh passengers annually by 2022-23.
"After the green signal from the central government, the construction work for the much awaited second International airport in Delhi NCR region will commence by the end of 2018," Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Department said in a release.
The airport at Jewar would help in easing the traffic at the Delhi international aerodrome.
"Many sectors will benefit with the development of this airport and it will be really beneficial for the people of western Uttar Pradesh who have to travel more than 250 km for Delhi or Lucknow airports," Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Minister Nand Gopal Gupta said in the release.
Citing a report about the airport project prepared by consultancy PwC, the release said 88 per cent of the traffic there would be domestic.
Jewar Airport would be able to handle 10 million passengers annually by 2029-30 and 100 million by 2050.
