Jewellery shops in Puducherry remained closed today in response to the call given by Gem and Jewellery Trade Federation for a day long strike to mark their protest against the Centre's order making PAN mandatory for all jewellery purchases worth Rs 2 lakh and above.
A spokesman of the Jewellery Shop Owners Association affiliated to the Federation said that the jewellers took strong exception to the order which would hit the business.
The strike was also intended to urge the Centre to roll back the order.
Puducherry has around 230 jewellery shops.
