Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is on a three-day visit to the Ladakh region, today inaugurated the Leh and Kargil satellite campuses of the University of Kashmir.
The setting up of the satellite campuses at these places was a long-pending demand of the people of the region, given its inhospitable terrain, an official spokesman said.
Both the campuses have adequate facilities for teaching and residing.
At Kargil, the chief minister was informed that the satellite campus, built at a cost of Rs 29 crore, would have a student intake capacity of 150, initially in three subjects -- Information Technology, Arabic and Botany.
During her brief interaction with the students, Mehbooba announced that buses would be provided to ferry them from their areas to the campus.
She also directed to introduce subjects such as Persian, Education and certain skill development courses.
Later, the chief minister visited Leh on the second leg of her Ladakh tour, where she inaugurated the Leh satellite campus of the Kashmir University at Phyang.
Built at a cost of Rs 27.40 crore, the Leh satellite campus is spread over an area of 41 hectares.
It has separate buildings for classrooms, hostels, administration, arts and science streams.
The chief minister directed to start undergraduate courses at the campus, which have a good demand in the job market, besides courses on regional development, ethnography, geology etc.
