Angelina Jolie kept her double mastectomy operation a secret even her father Jon Voight, who found out about it after reading her article.
Voight, however, is moved by the brave step taken by his daughter.
Jolie underwent the preventive procedure after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene which leads to an increased risk in breast and ovarian cancer. Jolie finished three months of medical procedures on April 27.
The 37-year-old lost her mother Marcheline Bertrand, 56, in 2007 to breast and ovarian cancer.
Voight found out about his daughter's preventive procedure by reading her New York Times piece, along with the rest of the world.
Voight said he saw his daughter and her longtime partner, Brad Pitt, two days ago at a birthday celebration for his son and Jolie's brother, James Haven.
"But I didn't know. It wasn't obvious at all. I found out (Tuesday) morning. I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she's handled this," Voight told New York Daily News.
He added that he respects her decision to keep the news private, even from him.
"I want the focus to be on the inspiration," he said, calling Jolie "a very extraordinary person."
Voight said he talked to Jolie about her shocking revelation, during which she "explained to me and educated me on this stuff."
"My love and admiration for my daughter can't be explained in words."
Voight and Jolie have mended their relationship after their famous falling-out in 2002 when he claimed he urged her to seek help for "serious mental problems.
