Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today announced Rs one crore financial assistance to the family of Delhi Police constable Jagbir Singh who was shot dead allegedly by criminals two days ago in Outer Delhi's Vijay Vihar area.
Paying tribute to the constable who had laid down his life in the line of duty, Jung said government has decided to pay the compensation to the family of the policemen.
The decision came a day after AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal shot off a letter to Jung demanding Rs one crore compensation to the next of kin of the constable. The Congress had also sought financial assistance to the family.
"I pay tribute to the departed soul, who laid down his life, while serving our nation. May his family bear the loss with strength and fortitude," said Jung in his tribute to the slain constable.
42-year-old Singh, who had won best beat constable award twice, was shot down by a gang of five burglers in Vijay Vihar in the wee hours of Monday when he and another constable tried to nab them, according to police.
Singh had joined Delhi Police in 2008 after serving in the Indian Army for 15 years. He hailed from Bhiwani district of Haryana. He is survived by his wife and son.
The incident took place around 1:30 AM just a few hundred meters from the local police station when constable Jagbir and Narender were patrolling the area on a motorcycle.
The duo intercepted an auto-rickshaw in which the five alleged burglars were moving looking for an opportunity to strike somewhere.
When the policemen confronted them and tried to take them to the nearby police station they opened fire on cops and fled.
While Jagbir died on the spot, Narender was injured and is now undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Police has arrested two men identified as Santosh alias Lucky (23) and Ved Rampal (32). The duo was arrested from Shahbad Dairy area yesterday.
Sources have said that two other boys have also been picked up in the case but their age is being verified to ascertain whether they are minors or adults. Efforts are on to trace and nab the fifth accused in the case Jagbir Singh was named best beat constable twice.
