Nisar, the most senior judge of the supreme court, will replace chief justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali who retires on December 31.
Earlier this year, when Jamali went for pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, Nisar had served as the Acting Chief Justice.
Nisar was born on January 18, 1954 in Lahore and obtained an undergraduate degree in law from University of Punjab.
In 1982, Justice Nisar became an advocate of the High Court and advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1994. He was then elevated as the Judge of the High Court in 1998 and of the Supreme Court in 2010.
Outgoing Justice Jamali served for 15 months after he was appointed in September 2015.
