12-year old Anjiniah, who received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee today in Delhi, is an orthopedically handicapped person, hailing from a below poverty line family from Ballari District, according to a release by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled which runs the school.
He is being raised by his widowed mother, a daily wage worker. His hands are underdeveloped just hanging from his shoulder and yet he is quite independent. He writes and paints with his feet.
The Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, a Bengaluru-based organization, set up to provide equal opportunities for children with various disabilities, won the National Award for Child Welfare (2013) under the "Institutions" category.
The President presented the award to Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled Founder Managing Trustee Mr. Mahantesh G. K, the release said.
