A committee headed by eminent agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan has recommended Rao's name, a release from Rao's office said.
The award will be presented on September 5 in New Delhi, it said.
"Rao has been selected for the award for his "innovative and yeoman services rendered for the welfare of farmers and farm sector," the release added.
