Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal today appealed to the Narendra Modi government against raising gas prices as proposed by the previous UPA dispensation, saying it will have a cascading effect on the common man.
"According to reports, the new government is planning to double gas prices. If this happens, the prices of power and food items will shoot up. We appeal to the government not to go ahead with it (hike)," Kejriwal said.
A new pricing regime was to be implemented from April for all private and public sector natural gas producers under which rates were to rise to USD 8.3 next month from USD 4.2 per million British thermal units.
AAP had sought Election Commission's intervention to stall the proposed hike from April 1 following which the latter asked the government to defer the same till the Lok Sabha elections got over.
During his brief stint as Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal had ordered an FIR against the then Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily and RIL head Mukesh Ambani and others for allegedly conspiring to double gas prices.
