Kerala police is all set to play a significant role in the state government's ambitious 'Haritha Keralam' (Green Kerala) mission, which envisages a clean and green state through waste management, organic farming and conservation of water resources with public support.
DGP Lokanath Behera today directed to organise various green initiatives in all police stations and offices under the mission, which will get underway on December eight.
He had already directed last month to follow a 'green protocol' in all stations and take steps to stop the burning of plastic and dumping of waste in its premises.
Such initiatives would be reviewed up to district levels and take necessary measures to make it more effective, a release said here.
Police would also provide support for the implementation of Haritha Keralam projects at the grass root level and would conduct awareness drives for this with the support of residence associations.
Awards would be given to those police stations and offices which showcase model performance in this regard, the release added.
Besides the disposal of solid waste, state government is planning to undertake a number of initiatives including reviving water resources like ponds, rivers, lakes and streams and increasing the area of land under cultivation as part of the Haritha Keralam programme.
Power generation from solar energy and wind energy would also be a part of this project, official sources said. Haritha Keralam is envisaged as a peoples' participatory programme on the lines of literacy mission, democratic decentralisation and peoples' planning, it said.
