Kerala to extend Rs 10 lakh aid to kin of Murugan's family

The Kerala government today decided to provide Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance to the widow and two minor sons of a road accident victim from Tamil Nadu, who died after being 'denied' treatment by various hospitals in Kerala on August 6.
The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here.
The amount is to meet the educational expenses of the two children of the deceased Murugan, a government release said.
The amount will be deposited in a bank and interest amount will be handed over to Murugammal, Murugan's widow.
Murugan, a migrant worker from Tirunelveli, had suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in Kollam. Despite being taken to various hospitals in an ambulance, he was not provided treatment for seven hours and he succumbed to injuries.

He had been working as a milkman in Kollam for the past 25 years.

The chief minister had apologised to the family in the state assembly for the manner in which he was treated.
Murugan's widow Murugammal and two sons had met the chief minister this morning and he had promised all help.
In a Facebook post later, Vijayan said, "We join the family in their sorrow. The government will ensure that such tragic experiences do not happen to anyone."
Vijayan said the government would intervene to ensure that intensive care is provided to the patients when mishaps occur.
Murugammal told reporters that she had sought the state government's help to educate her sons aged four and six, and support for the family.

In a memorandum submitted to Vijayan, she said her husband, who was working as a milkman at Kottiyam in Kollam district, was the family's sole bread-winner.
With his death, there was no one to look after her and her children who were studying in class 2 and LKG, she said.
