Lt Governor Anil Baijal today ordered the Delhi Police to launch a crackdown on organised "forced begging" and nab the kingpins, saying there would be no compromise on safety of children and women.
Baijal has asked the force to conduct joint drives with the city's social welfare department to rescue child beggars and skill them under existing schemes.
The directions were issued as the Lt Governor chaired a crime review meeting with focus on human trafficking at Raj Niwas here.
"Lt Governor stressed upon the need for a crackdown on the organised gangs involved in human trafficking and begging...LG directed Delhi Police to take stringent measures against the organised gangs and keep up its vigil in partnership with the community," the L-G said in a statement.
On the issue, the Lt Governor tweeted, "Organised begging to be curbed. Joint drives to be launched by Police & Social Welfare Deptt. No compromise on safety of our children & women (sic)".
In the meeting, Baijal complimented Delhi Police's 'Operation Milap' that has seen the police trying to reconcile the children at Children Homes with their missing children list in order to reunite them with their families.
The L-G was informed by police that a three-fold strategy for tackling trafficking in Delhi comprising prevention, protection, and prosecution is underway which has resulted in a higher rate of rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of the rescued women and children in the society.
