A missing labour leader from here was allegedly kidnapped by a gang and later abandoned in a town in neighbouring Tamil Nadu today, police said.
40-year old V Udhayakumar, a trade union leader owing allegiance to the ruling AINRC was found abandoned in Walajapet a day after he was allegedly abducted.
Four persons who allegedly kidnapped him after posing as Income Tax department sleuths were arrested, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) V.J.Chandran told reporters here.
He said Udhayakumar was reported missing since yesterday and on a man-missing complaint police had registered a case and special teams were searching for him.
One of the teams traced Udhayakumar at Walajapet where he was abandoned by the accused along with his car, he said.
Police who managed to contact him over his mobile phone after several unsuccessful attempts rushed to the site, rescued him and brought him back here.
Udhayakumar said he was confined in a house in a secluded place by the gang which was persuading him to disclose details of his wealth before letting him off.
The SSP said police were on the look out for a few more persons involved in abduction and also searching for the three cars they had used.
Chandran said it was suspected that the labour leader was abducted for ransom and all angles were being investigated.
