Vikram Nagech, from New Delhi, was a student of fifth semester in B.A. LLB course at the NLU and had been staying in the university hostel, they said.
"He (Vikaram) went out with some of his college friends around 7.30 pm to hang out at a restaurant opposite the institution. His friends returned by 10.00 pm, while Vikram refused to come along, saying he would return later," ACP Bhopal Singh Lakhawat said.
Vikram was last contacted by his friends at 10.50 pm, when he assured them that he would return in some time. But after that there was no contact between them, the ACP said.
Lakhawat said the police are investigating whether he committed suicide or it was an accidental death and are waiting for the post mortem report.
According to some of Vikram's college mates, he was depressed for some reason since past few days and had been seeking treatment for it.
The Registrar of the varsity, Sohan Lal Sharma, said Vikram was studious and had recently passed his fourth semester exams with good marks.
Sharma said according to Vikram's friends, he was used to sit on the rail tracks near the college very often but they never learnt that what was going in his mind.
