Officials said the department has prepared a proposal to replace the existing lights with LED bulbs along all the roads under its purview.
They said the existing lights consume more electricity and power bills run into lakhs of rupees.
"A proposal has been made to install LED bulbs on the electricity poles erected along the 1,260-km long roads that fall under the jurisdiction of the department," a senior government official said.
"Installation of LED bulbs for street lighting purpose on all the PWD roads will help the government save electricity. Besides, it will also save government's money," the official said.
The project is expected to be completed in about next six months. PWD Minister Satyendar Jain, who holds the charge of the Power department, also favours the installation of LED bulbs and the proposal will be cleared soon, the official said.
