LED street lights to save Rs 1,000 crore in national capital

The government today said replacement of five lakh street lights with LED ones in the national capital would result in savings to the tune of more than Rs 1,000 crore over a period of seven years.
Earlier this week, the government launched the national LED lighting programme that would initially cover 100 cities.
Union Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal said the savings would be Rs 1,000 crore over a seven-year period when five lakh street lights in the national capital are replaced with LED lights, according to an official release.
Goyal, who is also in charge of Coal as well as New and Renewable Energy Ministries, was speaking at the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between South Delhi Municipal Corporation and Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). The pact is for replacing two lakh conventional street lights in the SDMC area with energy efficient LED lights.

"The repayments to EESL will be out of savings in energy and maintenance cost of SDMC over a seven-year contract period. EESL will also provide free replacements and maintenance of lights at no additional cost.
