A senior BJP leader said today that the tradition of lighting a ceremonial lamp at the beginning of public functions "should be followed", while claiming that the ritual had faded away a few decades ago.
BJP's Delhi in-charge Shyam Jaju said this at a function here in the presence of party president Amit Shah.
"The BJP has contributed to the country in many ways. We started this programme by lighting a lamp. We should continue with the tradition of lighting a ceremonial lamp in our country ('Iss desh main deep prajwallan ki parampara chalu rahni chahiye')," he said.
"The practice had faded away by 90s and then the ritual was more of cutting a ribbon. We must continue with the lighting of a lamp," Jaju said.
The function was held to release a people's outreach magazine of BJP MP Maheish Girri. It took place at the NDMC Convention Centre, in the heart of Delhi.
BJP's Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari and senior Sangh leader Bajrang Lal Gupta were also present on the occasion.
Shah was welcomed to the venue by rendition of Vedic chants.
Shah, accompanied by Jaju, Girri, Tiwari and Gupta lighted a ceremonial lamp put up in the corner of the stage before the release the book.
"Our leaders have taught many things. And, to many of our workers, the party values teach them to work on matters which are not related to politics or driven by vote-bank. So, they do (charitable) donation, work in slums, do yoga, plant trees," Jaju said.
The programme came to an end with the singing of 'Vande Mataram' by all present.
