Live streaming will remove 'secrecy' in court proceedings: Santosh Hegde

Retired Supreme Court judge N Santosh Hegde Wednesday said live streaming and video recording of court proceedings would remove 'secrecy', bring in more transparency and create confidence in the minds of people in the institution of judiciary.

"I think its a good move because there will be more transparency there, and even the people outside the legal profession will have an idea what happens in the legal profession," the former Solicitor General of India told PTI on the Supreme Court agreeing to live-streaming and video recording of court proceedings.

Otherwise, they (people) are totally kept out of it. They are not able to follow cross-examination and other things, he said.

"In all, its a good move, because it takes away the secrecy... whatever is there in the legal proceedings," added Hegde, a former Karnataka Lokayukta.

The move will bring in more transparency and it will create confidence in the minds of the people in the institution of judiciary, he added.

The Supreme Court Wednesday agreed to live streaming and video recording of court proceedings. The apex court said that necessary rules for balancing rights of public and protecting dignity of litigants will be placed soon.
