Five policemen have been suspended on charge of negligence in connection with the custodial death of a prisoner here, with postmortem stating strangulation as cause of death and injury marks on legs.
"Based on preliminary enquiry, SHO Gorakhnath Yadav, night duty officer Sub Inspector Rajveer Singh, constables on duty Chetan Yadav and Ram Chandra, and Totaram have been suspended on charge of negligence of duty," SSP Nitin Tiwari said.
The deceased, Vineet Sharma, who was arrested in connection with the murder of a CISF constable and his wife, was yesterday found hanging inside Indirapuram police station.
A fellow prisoner had alleged that the victim was tortured to death, but police denied the charge, saying Vineet had committed suicide.
A murder case has been registered against unknown person on the complaint of a constable as no relative of the victim came forward to lodge complaint, Tiwari said.
The matter will be investigated and the culprit will be brought to book, he said.
Enquiry has been handed over to Circle Officer, SSP said, adding, he will write to District Magistrate for a magisterial enquiry in the issue. Departmental enquiry will be conducted by SP (City) Shiv Shanker Yadav, he said.
A team of three doctors conducted the postmortem, which stated that the death was caused due to strangulation and there were injury marks on the victim's legs.
Family members of Vineet alleged that he had died due to torture by police and now sleuths are trying to prove that it is a suicide. They also alleged that police also detained them.
His father Ramesh Chand Sharma alleged that Vineet was dead when taken to hospital whereas police version was that Vineet was alive and died on way to hospital.
Vineet was arrested by Indirapuram police along with one more person Narendra on April 26. Narendra had alleged that they were tortured and Vineet died of electric shocks.
Constable Sharma and his wife Babli were found dead in the CISF staff quarters on April 24.
