Director Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive") was initially circling the project and actor Ryan Gosling was attached to play the title role, but the two eventually left to pursue other projects.
Based on a novel by William F Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, the original movie was released in 1976 with Michael York as the titular character. It spawned a TV spin-off starring Gregory Harrison and airing from 1977 to 1978.
