A Lok Sabha member demanded on Thursday that privacy rules be enforced in cases of sexual crimes against children, protesting against incidents of rapes being projected as breaking news by media with journalists thronging the victim's home.
Raising the issue in the House during a discussion on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Supriya Sule of the NCP also said that politicians should also not make a show of their visits to the victim to ensure that his or her privacy is protected.
Sule said there are privacy laws in such matters but they are not implemented.
When media persons are present outside a house, the people know what has happened, she said.
"It is still a breaking news, when there is a 'balatkar' (rape)," Sule said.
The NCP member asked the Union government to follow a policy of zero tolerance against cases of eve-teasing while supporting the bill which seeks to provide death penalty for aggravated sexual assault on children and greater punishments for other crimes against minors.
