A day after two history-sheeters, were shot dead here in an 'encounter,' a top police official today rejected the charge that they were killed after being arrested.
Talking to reporters here, Madurai District Superintendent of Police, P Manivannan denied reports in a section of media that the rowdies were arrested in Alanganallur before they were killed in an encounter at Sikandar Chavadi area, where they resided.
In the reports, the relatives of the two deceased alleged it was a fake encounter and that the two were killed after the arrest.
Detailing the encounter, the top official said it took place after the two rowdies, Muthu Irulandi alias Manthiri and 'Sakuni' Karthick tried to attack the police team, which had gone to arrest them following a tip-off.
Despite warnings issued by the team, one of the rowdies who carried a country-made pistol tried to open fire at them following which the both were shot dead in self-defense, the SP claimed.
The deceased were wanted in 20 cases including murder and dacoity in several southern districts.
A report on the encounter has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commission, Manivannan said.
