Forty-eight persons were arrested Sunday following a raid by the Crime Branch Unit 1 of Thane police at a venue where gambling activities were allegedly underway, police said.
The raid was carried out early Sunday at the Vignaharta Samajeek Seva Mandal office situated on the first floor of MSRTC's Khopat Bus Depot, said senior inspector Nitin Thackre of the Crime Branch.
The people nabbed there were playing a card game called "teen patti" which is banned under anti-gambling laws in the state, the official said.
"We have seized Rs 5.40 lakh in cash as well as other items valued at Rs 5.21 lakh. Of the 48 people arrested, 24 were gambling patrons while 24 were staff operating the racket," he said.
Naupada police has registered a case under the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, Thackre said.
