Maha MLAs call for steps to improve quality of education

Expressing concern over the quality of education imparted in Maharashtra, members of the state Legislative Assembly today called for immediate measures to address the issue.
The discussion on the topic was initiated by BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar, who stressed that quality in education was necessary for the all-round development of the state.
Participating in the debate, former Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil suggested that special emphasis should be given on school education, especially between standard VI and VIII.
He urged the state Education Minister Vinod Tawde who was present in House, to convene an all-party meet to discuss ways to improve the standard of education.

Criticising the private engineering and medical colleges over their style of functioning, the NCP leader said, "It is unfortunate that students who secure 50-55 per cent marks in MBBS seek admission by paying a handsome donation to get in MD course.
"This clearly shows the level of education imparted to these students in private colleges. The so-called qualified doctors are not able to treat patients properly and also unable to diagnose."

Patil also said elections to the university students body should not be held.
Former Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Patangrao Kadamm, however, took objection to the criticism that those running big educational institutions have become "Shikshan Samrat" (emperors).

Kadam, who founded the Bharti Vidyapeeth Deemed University, described it as a challenge to set up a private institution and earn a name in the field of education.
