With the sea shore from Dadar chowpatty to Mahim Fort facing threat of sand erosion, the Maharashtra government in collaboration with maritime board plans to restore the disappearing beach and beautify the area.
A proposal in this regard prepared by the maritime board has been submitted to the state government for approval.
Maharashtra rural development minister and city guardian minister Jayant Patil, who has been looking into the sand erosion and subsequent disappearing of beach across the 1,800 metre stretch of Chaityabhoomi-Dadar chowpatty to the Mahim fort for past few years, said, "The chowpatty should be restored and its beautification should be done."
As per the proposal, advanced technology of geo-tube and tetrapods would be used to restore the beach.
According to an official from the rural development department, due to sand erosion, the beach is disappearing and is causing danger to the buildings near the sea shore.
"The strong sea waves are hitting the base of the buildings, which is a dangerous thing. Sand erosion is the prime issue for this. The beach should be restored," the official said.
Also, due to the beach disappearing, people are not turning up at the chowpatty, he said.
The state government, Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have decided to share the cost to restore the beach across the 1,800 meter stretch, he said.
The proposal submitted by maritime board is likely to be approved by the state government soon, the official said.
