Maharashtra faces rain fury; 33 killed in Vidarbha

Incessant showers over the last couple of days has disrupted normal life across Maharashtra where 33 people have perished in rain-related incidents.
The casualties were all reported in the eastern Vidarbha region where heavy rainfall has also damaged crops.
Thirteen persons died in rain-related incidents in Wardha district followed by eight each in Nagpur and Chandrapur districts. Two person were reported dead in Gondia district while one casualty each occurred in Bhandara and Gadchiroli, official sources said in Nagpur.
The state government has disbursed total compensation of Rs 40.44 lakh among the next of kin of the deceased in the above districts, they said.

As many as 21,328 houses were damaged in the heavy and persistent showers in Vidarbha while crops spread over 1.39 lakh hectares, too, suffered, sources said.
Meanwhile, Mumbai continued to be lashed by heavy showers for the second day today.

Rail and road traffic was thrown out of gear in the financial capital where several low-lying areas were flooded.
The suburban rail service, the lifeline of Mumbai, was disrupted as tracks were submerged at several places, giving commuters a hard time.
Parts of coastal Konkan, northern and southern Maharashtra also experienced heavy rainfall, according to information reaching Mumbai.
