"Shocked and saddened that actor Pijush Ganguly died. He was close to us and very talented. My condolences to his family. RIP," Banerjee said in microblogging site Twitter.
Banerjee had paid a visit to the hospital where Ganguly was admitted to inquire about his condition.
Music director Jeet Ganguly also expressed shock at the actor's death.
"Saddened and shocked to hear about the sad demise of #Pijush Ganguly. An extremely talented and fine actor, may his soul rest in peace," he said in his Twitter handle.
Ganguly worked in Ghosh's acclaimed film 'Angshumaner Chhabi'.
Actress Locket Chatterjee, who had worked with him in the film 'Dashami', said the film fraternity had hoped that he would be back in action.
Chatterjee said she had gone to the hospital to visit him a few days back and he was able to recognise her.
