A man has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a businessman in Calangute area, police said today.
Stanley Coutinho (28) was arrested by Calangute police last night.
Coutinho allegedly extorted money from several restaurant owners in the area by threatening to kill them, said inspector Jivba Dalvi.
"A businessman came forward to lodge complaint yesterday. We registered an FIR immediately," he said.
The complainant, who owns two restaurants, told police that Coutinho was extorting money from him for the last three months.
The accused was arrested from his house last night, the inspector said.
"Investigation revealed that Coutinho was operating alone. A case under IPC sections 386 (extortion), 451 (trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) has been registered," the police officer said.
