A 35-year-old man from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh has been booked under the newly-enacted law for allegedly giving triple talaq to his wife of 14 years following an argument, police said on Wednesday.
Police have booked the accused, Irfan, under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, on the complaint filed by his wife Leerazbin (35) on Tuesday.
The couple has seven children.
No arrest is made so far.
According to the complainant, Irfan gave her triple talaq on Monday following an argument over some issue while they were walking on a road, a police officer said.
The woman approached the district superintendent of police on Tuesday and later walked into Kotwali police station with her seven children, he said.
"We have booked Irfan under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. Efforts are on to arrest him," said additional superintendent of police (ASP) PL Kurve.
The new legislation makes the practice of instant divorce or talaq-e-biddat among Muslims a punishable offence with three-year imprisonment.
