The accused, 27-year-old Raju Biswal, was arrested from Jajpur Road area and was brought to Kuakhia police station on Sunday afternoon.
He escaped the same night on the pretext of going to toilet, the police said.
An FIR has been lodged and the role of the policemen who were in charge of the accused is being probed, the police said adding efforts are on to trace him.
The accused was wanted in several cases of robbery and snatching on NH-5 in Kuakhia and Panikoili police stations areas where as many as nine snatching cases were reported in the past two months.
