Ramesh (30) and Ghanshyam (33) tried to board the "over-crowded" Bihar Sampark Kranti Express as it was entering the platform at New Delhi railway station around 1 pm.
However, Ramesh slipped into the space between the train and platform and died on the spot, police said quoting eyewitnesses.
Ghanshyam also fell and was injured. He was later given treatment and is now out of danger, a senior Northern Railway official said.
"The mishap occured during the train's placement. Though the departure time was 2.30 pm, it was being placed at the platform (No. 14) around 1 pm," the Railway official said.
Police have informed Ramesh's family in Bihar.
Officials have appealed to passengers to stay calm and not to rush while boarding trains.
Railways is facing a challenging task to meet the ever growing demand for trains during Chhat puja season.
More than two dozen special trains have been pressed into service in view of the festive season. Besides the special trains, extra coaches are being attached to regular trains to meet the rush, the official said.
