Mrinal Sikdar (29) married Kakali Sarkar of Naihati in North 24 Parganas district on 26 January and the reception was scheduled to take place this evening.
However, his body was found hanging in a nylon rope outside their house early today by morning walkers.
"We cut the rope, brought him down and rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead," Mrinal's father Nirmal Sikdar said.
The body was sent for post-mortem.
Kakali, who became a widow two days after marriage, was inconsolable. "He told me last night that I had to be dressed well in the reception. But I don't know why he did this."
Her father Ajit Sarkar, said he did not have any complaint against the Sikdar family.
He said, "I will leave the decision about my daughter's fate to them. Mrinal's father has said he will take all her responsibilities."
But she will return to her father's home for the time being.
