A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for smothering his former wife, who had filed a complaint accusing him of mistreating her.
Additional Sessions Judge Narinder Kumar awarded the jail term to Mohd Rashid, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, for murdering his ex-wife Shajia, 25, in October 2012.
The court said it stands established that Rashid called Shajia from her parental house on phone, took her to a hotel room and murdered her during the night before fleeing.
"Rashid has failed to put forth any explanation as to how Shajia whom he was accompanying in room no. 207 (of the hotel) came to be murdered. Non-explanation speaks volume against him regarding his involvement in the crime," the court said, adding it does not find any gap in the chain of circumstances established by the prosecution.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Rashid.
According to the prosecution, on October 1, 2012, Rashid called his former wife Shajia and asked her to meet him. He took her to a hotel in Paharganj here but left the place during the night after murdering the woman.
The next day, when hotel staff forcibly open the room's door, which was locked from inside, they found Shajia's body lying on the bed, it said.
Officials of Paharganj Police Station were informed and according to the post mortem report, the woman was smothered. Rashid was arrested later on.
According to the police, Rashid had married the woman in 2010 and they divorced within a year.
It said the woman started living with her parents but within two months of their divorce, he again married her for the second time and after sometime, some dispute arose between them after which Shajia filed a complaint against him with crime against women cell for allegedly mistreating her.
Rashid, however, denied that he had re-married Shajia or that he mistreated her.
The court also did not take into consideration the point that they had re-married as it could not be proved.
Rashid also denied that he had called the woman to meet him or that he murdered her.
