The accused, Radhey Shyam, first drowned his two daughters aged seven and five, and three-year-old son, by placing them inside a water tank and closing the lid from the outside.
He then went to the kitchen where his wife, Manju (33), was preparing food and hacked her to death with a sharp weapon. He even hurriedly cremated her body, police said.
The accused attempted to commit suicide by jumping into a well, but he was rescued by locals here, Narnaul Superintendent of Police, Hamid Aakhtar said.
His children were identified as Khushi, Tamanna and Naitik, police said.
Police said the accused was hospitalised after he tried to end his life and now his condition was stable.
He has been taken into custody and investigations are on.
