A man allegedly shot dead his wife at Phase 10 area here today following an altercation between them over settling abroad, the police said.
Following the incident, the shocked man called up the police and confessed to his crime, after which he was arrested, they said.
The couple was travelling in a car when following a heated exchange, Nirankar Singh Sarao (60) fired at least six shots at his wife Kulwant Kaur (62) from point blank range, killing her on the spot, they said.
Sarao, a hotelier, was undergoing heart and psychiatric treatment at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, for which he along with his wife, had left his hotel in Phase 10 area, where they were staying, around 9.30 am, they said.
They had left for the hospital in the hotel manager's car. A neighbour said the couple looked fine when they met him before leaving the hotel.
Sarao told the police that his wife and in-laws were insisting him to sell off his property here and settle in England, where his in-laws were living, they said.
Today, on their way to PGIMER, Sarao's wife again started insisting the same. When he had made it clear to her that he would not do that, she asked him to stop the car as she wants to get down, the police said.
In a fit of rage, he shot his wife dead, they said.
A case of murder has been registered against Sarao at Phase 11 police station. The licensed revolver used in the crime and the vehicle has been seized. The body has been sent for post-mortem, the police said.
The couple has two children, both settled in the UK, they said.
