Radha Mohan Munda and another man allegedly tried to drag a 35-year-old woman to a desolate place at Ichagarh to rape her yesterday, Officer-in-charge of Ichagarh police station Amarjeet Prasad said.
The woman was, however, rescued by villagers and a panchayat meeting was convened last evening to discuss the issue and punish the two.
It was revealed at that meeting that Munda had allegedly raped the woman's 55-year-old mother last Wednesday though no police complaint was made, Prasad said.
At this, the enraged mob severely assaulted him and handed him over to the police.
Prasad said Munda succumbed to his injuries on the way to M G M Hospital here. Munda's accomplice managed to escape.
