Acting on tip-off, sleuths of Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad nabbed one Mohammad Rafiq Shaikh near his house in Juhapura area here and seized 1.31 kg of brown sugar from his possession, an official release said.
In his confession, Shaikh claimed that he received this cache from a Madhya Pradesh-based person four years ago and kept it in his house to sell later, it said.
However, 15 days after receiving the cache, Shaikh was caught by state unit of Narcotics Control Bureau with another cache of seven kg of hashish (charas) which he brought from Jaipur. The case is still pending in court while he was in jail since 2012 in it, the ATS release said.
He claimed that since his parole was ending on March 4, he had decided to get rid of the banned drugs before going back to jail.
"Shaikh had planned to dispose the brown sugar in the Sabarmati river. However, we nabbed him hours before he could execute his plan.
"He has been running illegal drug racket since 1983, when he moved to Juhapura after being acquitted in a murder case by the court at that time," the release added.
