A 21-year-old man was allegedly shot at and injured by unidentified assailants at southeast Delhi's Sangam Vihar colony in a suspected case of personal rivalry, police said today.
The victim, identified as Azharuddin, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma centre and his condition was stated to be critical. The bullet grazed past Azharuddin's neck, for which he had to undergo a surgery, said a police official.
According to the police, the incident was reported at around 9 PM yesterday when one of the assailants came to Azharuddin's residence looking for him. After a conversation which lasted for a few minutes, Azharuddin was seen stepping out of his house while two more men joined them. After a few more minutes, one of them pulled out a pistol and allegedly opened fire.
While Azharuddin tried to escape, one of the bullets grazed past his neck and he collapsed on the ground. The trio fled the spot before locals could gather there. Locals called up the police control room and Azharuddin was rushed to the hospital. A case of attempt to murder was registered and investigation was taken up.
The police haven't been able to record Azharuddin's statement as he has not yet been declared fit for the procedure. Questioning of his relatives and neighbours have so far not provided any lead in the case, said the official.
Azharuddin works as a driver for a private enterprise and lives at Sangam Vihar A block with his father and four brothers, police said.
The police haven't ruled out that the incident could be the result of long-standing rivalry between two of the several small-time gangs operating in the area. Ho"wever, no conclusions can be drawn unless we get further leads," police added.
