criminal background was today shot dead in an encounter with the police on the outskirts of Odisha's Sambalpur town.
The deceased identified as Raju Saha, was killed in an exchange of fire near Dengasaragi under Ainthapalli police station limits here, the Sambalpur SP Akhileswar Singh said.
A police subinspector has been injured in the shootout, he said.
Police said, they raided Dengsaragi village under Ainthapalli police limits after getting information regarding presence of some criminal elements there.
Police claimed that Raju first opened fire on the police party. He was, however, hurt in the exchange of fire. Raju succumbed to his injuries on the way to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla, the sources added.
Police said there were several criminal cases were pending against Raju.
