Manekshaw remembered

Marking the conclusion of the centennial birth anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, a life size statue of the late General was unveiled at Black Bridge at nearby Wellington and a bridge named after him.
Lt Gen S K Gadeok, Commandant, Defence Staff and Service College, unveiled the six-foot tall statue in the presence of S Suresh Kumar, Commandant, Madras Regiment Centre, and Brandy Batliwala, the granddaughter of Manekshaw, who passed away in nearby Wellington in 2008 aged 94.
A memorial service was also organised at the Parsee Zoroastrian Cemetery here, where Manekshaw, one of India's greatest Generals, was laid to rest.

A 14-km Field Marshal memorial marathon run was also organised in which 700 athletes and others from various walks of life in Niligirs and Coimbatore districts participated.
On his retirement in January 1973, Manekshaw, known as Sam Bahadur, settled down in nearby Coonoor.
